Introduction – Back pain and reduced mobility.
In the UK around 2.5 million people or roughly 4% of the population experience back problems every day, and a staggering 4 out of 5 or 80% will suffer with some kind of back problem in their lifetime. Back pain and restricted movement understandably are the most common medical problem in the UK. It can happen suddenly due to lifting something, twisting badly, a fall or accident or it can a gradual problem that happens over time because of age related degeneration of the spine, lumber, and hips. Other medical conditions such as inflammatory disorders can bring about back pain and problems.
Back pain is caused by conditions affecting the spine and/or the surrounding structures.
PEMF therapy has dramatic analgesic effects but also improves mobility and eliminates painful muscles spasms (sudden involuntary contractions) that affect the muscles along the spine.
A study from pubmed show the pain-relieving properties of PEMF therapy on lower back pain. Published in January 2022 this shows that through 14 trials, compared to the placebo group the control group using PEMF therapy had a noticeable difference in the pain over the length of the trials. Function was also observed but in these studies no advantage was recorded.
PEMF therapy seems to be able to relieve the pain intensity and improve functionality in individuals with low back pain conditions.
a clear tendency to reduction of the pain intensity favouring the PEMF groups, reaching a minimal clinically important difference.
Quote from 2016 article of using PEMF therapy to treat lower back pain.
In many cases PEMF therapy eliminates the need for pain relief medication or surgery but can safely (in most cases) be used along side medication and if surgery is necessary can aid the healing process. PEMF therapy has strong analgesic effects (pain relieving effects) and will increase blood circulation and oxygenation in and around the affected area there by reducing swelling and inflammation. This encourages damaged soft tissue to repair quicker and stronger compared with a traditional healing regime.
